Description
The Smithsonian Institution is seeking proposals from qualified firms to provide professional non-technical services for design of a Presentation Center for the exhibition Moving Beyond Earth to be installed in the Smithsonian/Institution National Air and Space Museum (“SI/NASM”), Washington, DC. The exhibition shall explore the history and importance of human spaceflight in the United States during the space shuttle and space station era and what the future of the space program might be. The exhibition shall interpret the story of human spaceflight through artifacts, immersive experiences, high-technology interactive kiosks, and a Presentation Center. SI/NASM has a cooperative agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to contribute expertise and material. SI/NASM shall hire an Interactives Design Firm to develop concepts for educational interactives that will be placed around the Presentation Center and work with elements of the Presentation Center. The exhibition gallery is approximately 5,000 square feet with 20 foot ceilings. The exhibition shall be constructed in two phases: Phase I: The Presentation Center; Phase II: the remaining exhibit areas. The Presentation Center, Phase I, shall occupy about one-fifth of the exhibition space and shall open in September 2009. Phase II shall occupy the remainder of the space and shall open in late 2011. SI/NASM seeks a qualified firm to work with the project team and the Interactives Design Firm to develop concepts, to design, and to produce a construction drawing package for the Presentation Center and support areas. This Center shall include a demonstration/stage area as well as interactive units that will enhance the content of the exhibition gallery. The contractor shall work with specifications developed by the SI/NASM project team and the Interactives Design Firm in creating compelling, educational high-tech multi-configurable Presentation Area. Qualified firms must have design staff as well as registered architects and professional engineers in the electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering fields licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland and/or Virginia. Qualified firms shall also have on staff a Lighting Certified individual, qualified television broadcast engineers, and qualified audio engineers. The Smithsonian anticipates one (1) firm-fixed price contract will be awarded. The Smithsonian reserves the right to award a contract based on best value. It is anticipated that the selected contractor will provide said services beginning September, 2008. Contractors must be registered in the Central Contractor Registration (CCR) prior to award.
