- Description
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) intends to award a contract for One hundred samples to be analyzed by quantitative RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase PCR) and quantitative cell culture during the pilot phase of the study with an option to analyze an additional 900 samples should the initial analyses be acceptable to The Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP) Investigators. Outbreaks of influenza in healthcare facilities have occurred during influenza seasons; the pandemic has the potential to amplify transmission several fold. In order to maintain a functional healthcare system during a pandemic, both patients and healthcare workers must be protected. The experience from SARS outbreaks highlighted the importance of clear and accurate infection control recommendations in order to protect patients and healthcare personnel. Currently, the precision of recommendations is limited by a lack of studies demonstrating specific distances over which respiratory pathogens such as influenza remain infective. The Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP) has initiated a study to investigate airborne infectivity of influenza over time and distance (airborne suvivability) and environmental persistence on surfaces. DHQP has a requirement for PCR analysis and quantitative cell culture analysis for influenza of air and surface samples in support of the airborne infectivity and environmental persistence projects. The environmental samples need to be analyzed by DNA methods (i.e., polymerase chain reaction, PCR) to determine the total amount of virus (both infective and non-infective) in each sample and analyzed by quantitative cell culture to determine the total amount of infective (i.e. live) virus in each sample. The complete solicitation package will be available and posted at this site for downloading when issued. No telephone requests of the solicitation will be accepted or entertained. No questions will be questions will be answered via telephone. No hard copy of the solicitation package will be mailed. All responsible sources may submit a proposal for consideration.
