Description
The U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (DOC/NOAA/NESDIS) intends to modify an existing contract (DG133E-06-SE-5750) with the University of Texas - Austin to extend services for continued research in coral-based climate studies for the period commencing from time of award through August 31, 2009. This study involves using massive corals in the Caribbean sector of the tropical Atlantic Ocean for geochemical analysis. Coral samples will be removed from the skeleton and analyzed for the stable O and C isotopic composition as well as Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios. It is a collaborative effort between scientists at the University Nova Southeastern University (NSU), University of Miami RSMAS, USGS and University of South Florida (USF). In 2006, Dr. Quinn moved to the University of Texas at Austin (UT). In 2008, Dr. Halley retired from the USGS. The standard working arrangement has Dr. Dodge (NSU) focusing his efforts on studies of coral skeletal density, whereas Drs. Swart (RSMAS) and Quinn (UT) focus their efforts on studies of coral geochemistry. Geochemical analyses will be performed in the laboratories of Drs. Swart and Quinn. The previous USF phases of this study focused on generating proxy climate records from coral skeletons from the Florida Keys (Looe Key and Dry Tortugas) and Puerto Rico (La Perguera). The Looe Key and Dry Tortugas work is completed. A new suite of coral cores were recovered from La Parguera, Puerto Rico, last summer and these new cores formed the basis of the Ph.D. studies of Hali Kilbourne. All of this previous work has focused in the coral Montastraea spp., but recent work has begun to explore the coral Siderastraea spp. for its potential as a climate recorder (Maupin, 2008, MS thesis; Maupin, Quinn and Halley, in review). The UT portion of this year's study will include stable isotopic and elemental ratio determinations on a subset of corals samples from the Dry Tortugas. This procurement is being conducted per FAR Part 13 Simplified Acquisition Procedures (NTE $100k) NAICS code 541710. This is not a request for a competitive proposal. It is a notice of intent to modify an existing contract for continued research.
