- Description
- The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) has established the Orthopaedic Extremity Trauma Research Program (OETRP). The majority of trauma that occurs on the battlefield is orthopaedic-related, particularly involving the upper and lower extremities. Not only are they common, extremity injuries account for over two-thirds of the inpatient hospital costs and disability payments and are the largest source of morbidity for injured warriors. The OETRP is dedicated to improving outcomes of battlefield extremity injuries. To date, the program has focused on the following research topic areas: healing open traumatic bone defects, prevention of infection, prevention of heterotopic bone formation, improving standards of care (with emphasis on tissue viability assessment and wound irrigation /debridement technologies), repairing massive muscle defects, and translating research into practice. The United States Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA), on behalf of (USAMRMC), is issuing this Request for Information (RFI) to identify groups who can perform multi-center clinical trials in the area of orthopaedic trauma. It is envisioned that successful groups will be able to conduct one or more militarily-relevant studies and will be able to rapidly expand to include more centers or conduct more studies if additional funds become available. The total budget for this four-year project is projected to be approximately $12M. Only studies that have military relevance will be funded and cooperation and inclusion of capable military hospitals are requirements. It is also envisioned that this group will work in conjunction with the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research under the frame-work of a cooperative agreement. Please include potential studies and sites, organization and coordination of the multi-center group (including institutional resources such as volume of trauma admissions), and expertise and processes that may be used to answer important clinical questions. The Government is seeking responses from interested parties as a result of this announcement. The Government is soliciting interested parties only at this time. No awards will be made from this announcement. However, all information received may be used for a program announcement or evaluation of future awards. Interested groups shall provide a white paper (no more than 15 pages in length) describing their capabilities to meet the above requirement. Responses to this Request for Interest should be directed to RFI Response at the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA), email: rfiresponse@amedd.army.mil. To be of greatest value, responses should be received by 3:00PM eastern time, 10 October 2008. No telephone calls please.
