- Description
- A multidisciplinary research program is required to conduct research, development, and technology maturation in the area of metals behavior and life prediction. The required program will utilize numerical and experimental techniques to study metals behavior and the evolution of damage. An emphasis on physically-based, probabilistic approaches to the studied problems is highly encouraged. The proposed effort should be optimized for maximum impact in metals behavior and life prediction needs for legacy and emerging Air Force and Department of Defense systems. In addition to evolutionary research in the mechanical behavior and life prediction of conventional aerospace propulsion and airframe metals, research in emerging, high impact areas is desired. Examples of relevant, high-impact research areas are behavior and life prediction in a) graded metallic structures, b) metallic thermal protection systems, c) articles containing significant residual stresses, d) emerging hybrid materials containing combinations of metals and other materials systems (polymers, ceramics, etc.) The proposed effort should also be in harmony with other, high-impact Air Force programs such as the DARPA Accelerated Insertion of Materials (AIM) and Engine System Prognosis (ESP) programs, the Engine Management Logistics Infrastructure (EMLI) program, the Engine Rotor Life Extension (ERLE) program, the Versatile Affordable Advanced Turbine Engines (VAATE) program, the Integrated High Performance Turbine Engine Technology (IHPTET) program, and the Integrated High Payoff Rocket Propulsion Technology (IHPRPT) program. Specific materials systems of interest to the Air Force include, but are not limited to aluminum, titanium, and nickel-based alloys, advanced intermetallics, metal matrix composites, and fiber metal laminates. Technical Point of Contact : Michael Shepard, AFRL/RXLMN, telephone (937) 255-1384 or 2d Lt Christopher Hart, AFRL/RXLMN, telephone (937) 255-1347.
