- Description
- A monitoring system essential to the ongoing research conducted in the proposed laboratory vivarium. The proposed system completely automates the data monitoring and collection by logging continuous real-time readings for temperature, airflow, humidity, differential pressure, lighting, water flow and pressure, door security, and general vivarium security. This system has the ability to notify the vivarium staff of potential problems occurring in temperature, humidity, airflow, air pressure, and water supply, via phone/pager, then email. The proposed system allows for vivarium task management by viewing current operating instructions accuracy, functionality and training; records real-time animal and equipment management allowing the vivarium staff to monitor equipment and animal movements within the vivarium; incorporates a bulletin board function to allow access to digital database for videos and other documents for training; and has the ability to read and send messages to groups within the vivarium and can access other documents thru internet applications. The access to the digital database for all in the vivarium can not only give the vivarium staff and building staff access to documents, but it will make it much easier for outside site visitors to see how the vivarium operates on a day-to-day schedule. This digital database will also allow new employees a source for training on operating procedures within the vivarium. The internet application is a critical function because this will give access to other research institutions and their operating procedures. With the tri-service aspect of this new research laboratory it is even more important we cross check and balance each other to fulfill the research needs of all services and abide by all the Federal and DOD regulations for the proper care and use of laboratory animals in the DOD. The bulletin board function allows for anyone to receive and send messages to the vivarium staff about specific real-time vivarium problems. This system also has the ability to create the reports animal facility managers need to comply with local, city, state, Federal Regulations, and DOD regulations, including the Guide for the Care and Use Laboratory Animals. An automated watering feature can be integrated into a facility as we continue with our planned upgrades in the future. This insures compatibility of the systems crucial to our research programs. Therefore, the proposed monitoring system is essential to allow seamless functioning between systems. It is also mandatory to insure continuity of the research being performed, particularly with ongoing experiments so there are no changes in the way we provide for the animals care and well-being.
