Description
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) intends to issue a sole source award to Fischer Scientific for Boric Acid powder ACS #A74-3. This notice is per FAR citation 6.302-1. The BEP uses boric acid as a buffer in the nickel plating tanks. These tanks are used in the production of the BEP's currency plates and other securities. The boric acid needs to be in a fine powder form and ACS certified. As Fischer Scientific brand boric acid powder is added to the tanks, it floats on top of the solution and is absorbed slowly. The gradual absorption allows the solution to adjust the PH without a sudden change. The boric acid powder ordered previously, from non Fischer Scientific sources, sank to the bottom of the tank and was rapidly absorbed into the solution. This rapid absorption caused an abrupt change in the PH of the tank solution. Fischer Scientific is able to produce high quality and pure plating chemicals which are a requirement in the production of the currency plates. It is in the best interest of the BEP to purchase boric acid from Fischer Scientific. The BEP is seeking small firms that are authorized resellers of Fischer Scientific boric acid powder ACS #A74-3. If none are available, the purchase will be made directly to Fischer Scientific. If your firm is able to provide Fischer Scientific for Boric Acid powder ACS #A74-3 please contact: Kathleen Reidy, Contract Specialist, at 202-874-2507 or Kathleen.Reidy@bep.treas.gov by Thursday December 18, 2008 2 PM EST.
