Description
The US Army Armament Research Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC), Weapon Systems and Technology Directorate, Direct Fire Infantry Weapons System Division, Picatinny Arsenal, NJ 07806-5000, has a need for evaluating applicability of boron coating to small caliber weapons components. This surface treatment/coating may offer the potential of replacing certain legacy coatings (hard chrome, heavy phosphate) currently utilized on infantry weapons. This effort will include coating samples from the following steels: 1015-1018, 1040-1060, 4130-4150, 9310H, low alloy steel used on gun barrels (composition of the alloy will be supplied). Recommendation would also be sought in terms of steel alloys best suitable for boronizing to obtain required properties (hardness, coefficient of friction, corrosion resistance). Required capabilities include boronizing steel parts (sizes of approximately 2 18 in long) of irregular shapes, and the inside a of 5.5 mm ID (.21 in) and approximately.875 in OD steel tube that is 19 in long. Boronizing process should not distort the dimensional accuracy of the parts. It is desired that the process be performed at a temperature of 850C or lower. Parts will most likely need to be heat treated after boronizing, to obtain required hardness. Interested Offerors shall provide, at no cost to the Government, information on their capabilities to perform the aforementioned tasks. In addition, interested Offerors shall provide a summary of the personnel skill levels, equipment, and facilities to include technical knowledge, experience, and areas of expertise relevant to topic area. All information is to be submitted at no cost or obligation to the Government; information provided will not be returned. Responses should be limited to no more than twenty-five (35) pages with a minimum font of Arial size 10. All responsible, interested Offerors are encouraged to submit their capabilities/qualification data and any pertinent information via email, or electronically, NO LATER THAN 10 March 2009. TELEPHONE INQUIRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. The Government will accept written questions by email. The point of contact for this action is Rachael Houle, Contracts Specialist, CCJM-JA (973) 724-2197, rachael.us.army.mil. This is a Research and Development Sources Sought/ Market Survey Announcement only and should not be construed as a Request for Proposal or a commitment by the U.S. Government. The U.S. Government does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this market survey.
