Description
The Land Resources Division of the National Park Service (NPS) is looking for a two-day course in writing legal land descriptions. This class will be held in Spokane, Washington during the week of June 22, 2009. This class shall follow the principals outlined in Wattles, Gurdon H., Writing Legal Descriptions, 1976. This course will serve as a refresher for individuals with substantial experience writing legal descriptions as well provide individuals new to this discipline a complete foundation of knowledge necessary to write and interpret legal descriptions of real property. As such, the instructor should have at least 15 years of experience in this field and be able to answer difficult questions about specific situations encountered when writing legal descriptions. Experience working with the Department of Interior (DOI) is preferred. This class should include a brief history of legal descriptions in western civilization as well some instruction in traditional methods used to plot legal descriptions. However, the focus of this course shall be on the parts of a legal description (preamble, body, clauses) itself and what is required in a good legal description. While legal descriptions for sectionalized land will be covered the majority of the class should focus on metes and bounds descriptions. The class shall include several hand-on exercises. Some of these exercises should assume complete survey data is available while others shall assume the description will be drafted entirely by using other parcels already on record in the public repository.
