Description

Following are comments from the GSA structural engineer regarding design review expectations. This pertains to the construction document submittal that will be required of the awardee (not proposal requirements): Although the proposed chiller and the existing chiller weigh approximately the same amount, the proposed chiller will have a different weight distribution, a different footprint and a different bolt pattern. In addition, the proposed chiller will be installed per the requirements of a different and more current Building Code. In terms of structural design, I would expect to see calculations that verify that the existing roof framing has the capacity to resist a combination of vertical and lateral forces that are specified by the 2006 International Building Code, Section 1613 and the ASCE Standard, ASCE/SEI 7-05, Section 13.6, “Mechanical and Electrical Components”. In terms of structural drawings, I would expect to see structural plans, sections and details that will illustrate the complete and final installation of the new chiller unit that are based upon the manufacturer's recommendations for installation of their product and the strength requirements identified by the Engineer-of-Record's structural calculations. I will be expecting a submittal that contains these structural drawings and structural calculations, including the vendor's catalogues that pertain to the new chiller, for review and approval.
