- Description
- FL form FL form Synopsis: This is a request for information (RFI) from Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) seeking one or more commercial vendors capable of performing electropolishing on niobium superconducting radio frequency (SRF) accelerating cavities. The SRF cavities may be used as part of an International Linear Collider R&D program and for a proposed Project X facility to be sited at Fermilab. The primary objective is to develop one or more vendors who are fully capable of performing all preliminary surface processing steps, including electropolishing, on SRF cavity internal surfaces to the specifications required by ILC R&D and Project X. Once the processing steps are verified to be within specification, a processing throughput of 2-3 or more SRF resonators per week is desired. FNAL requires a commercial vendor to perform electropolishing and cleaning of niobium 1.3 meter long, 1.3 GHz nine-cell elliptical resonators. The requested process begins with receipt of fully fabricated cavities by the vendor and ends with the delivery of electropolished, clean, and dry cavities to Fermilab. The following specifications are minimum requirements for the process: •Each cavity shall receive a degreasing wash by hot ultrasonic bath •Each cavity shall have bulk material removal and polishing by the elctropolishing process on the interior surfaces the following specifications: o150 +/- 10 µm axially homogenous material removal by polishing from entire inner resonator surface. o0.1 µm Ra internal surface finish. •Each cavity shall be rinsed with ultra pure water. •Each cavity shall be dried in class 1,000 cleanroom conditions. •Each cavity shall receive an ultrapure ethanol rinse. Potential vendors must be capable of developing a surface processing facility that successfully completes each of the above processing steps at the expected cavity throughput rate of 2-3 or more per week. All infrastructure need not be currently in place. The approximate timeframe for this procurement is as follows: •Expression of interest – by April 21, 2009 •Proposal submission following RFP – by June 1, 2009. •Detailed design study submission from selected vendors due for evaluation by September 1, 2009. •Anticipated award date – January 1, 2010. •Facility design, development, and commissioning -- 1 year or less, starting January 01, 2010. •2-3 or more cavity processing rate per week beginning January 01, 2011 or earlier. Offerors wishing to express interest should submit to the primary procurement contact a short statement about the following: •Vendor Capabilities oElectropolishing experience on variety of pure metals oNiobium electropolishing oSurface cleaning experience oChemical handling, including HF, H2SO4 and other strong corrosives oSRF component development and/or processing oNiobium handling history oUltrapure water capacity oOther relevant expertise
