- Special Notice DARPA-SN-09-30: Cognitive Modeling Information Gathering Workshop; this is a Request for Information (RFI) only; DATE: May 7th, 2009; Registration deadline: April 30th, 2009. TECHNICAL POC: LCDR Joseph Cohn, PhD, Program Manager, DARPA/DSO (joseph.cohn@darpa.mil). DARPA/DSO will be hosting a workshop to gather information on how to use neural data to develop cognitive models. The workshop will be held at the Executive Conference Center, 3601 Wilson Blvd. STE 600, Arlington, VA. The objective of this workshop is to understand how neural data can be used to inform and/or assist in the development and/or capabilities of cognitive models for use in various DoD applications. We believe there have been tremendous advances in our understanding of cognitive neural processes, such as in the areas of experience and expertise, to the extent that the field of cognitive modeling can be fundamentally changed. Recent technological advances in these fields of cognitive neuroscience and cognitive modeling lead DARPA to believe that focused technology development efforts may result in significant advances in these capabilities for national defense. The workshop goals are to: (a) pulse the computational cognitive neuroscience community to determine state of the art in cognitive imaging and modeling; (b) evaluate current cognitive modeling techniques; (c) outline opportunities in advancing these cognitive modeling techniques using neural data; and, (d) identify impeding technical challenges in these areas to be overcome. The workshop is limited to 25 participants, 1 participant per institution. There is no fee for the workshop and early registration is recommended. During the registration process, attendees are requested to submit a brief (600 words maximum) description of their current research highlighting their contributions to the field of computational cognitive neuroscience and/or their ongoing pursuit of new paradigms for representing human cognitive processes. Registration will be on a first come first served basis (https://safe.sysplan.com/dso/cogmod). Registration will close on April 30th, 2009 or once 25 participants are confirmed, whichever comes first. Upon confirmed registration, participants will be asked to prepare in advance and present at the workshop, a brief overview (3 slides / 5-10 minutes maximum) outlining their current research. This presentation should include: 1) key challenges to how cognition is modeled today and how their work is addressing these; 2) potential directions for revolutionary new approaches to modeling human cognitive processes such as experience and expertise; and 3) potential or current ways to quantifiably measure cognitive model performance (e.g. measures of effectiveness, measures of performance). Details and submission information are available at (https://safe.sysplan.com/dso/cogmod). Proprietary notifications will not be honored; participants must come prepared to share knowledge and ideas. We request that participant presentations adhere to the description provided and not serve as a platform to propose new program ideas, sell technology products, etc. DISCLAIMERS AND IMPORTANT NOTES This is an RFI issued solely for information and new program planning purposes; it does not constitute a formal solicitation for proposals. In accordance with FAR 15.201(e), responses to this notice are not offers and cannot be accepted by the Government to form a binding contract. Submission is voluntary and is not required to propose to a subsequent Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) (if any) or other research solicitation (if any) on this topic. DARPA will not provide reimbursement for costs incurred in responding to this RFI. No proprietary or classified information should be submitted. Proprietary notifications will not be honored at this workshop. Respondents are advised that DARPA is under no obligation to acknowledge receipt of the information received or provide feedback to respondents with respect to any information submitted under this RFI. There is no guarantee that the effort of this workshop will result in any funding opportunities. Further logistical information is available from (https://safe.sysplan.com/dso/cogmod); Point of Contact LCDR Joseph Cohn, PhD, Program Manager, DARPA/DSO (joseph.cohn@darpa.mil)
