- Description
- The Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) program's mission is to support the mission and vision of the Global Immunization Division (GID) including "preventing disease, disability, and death through immunization". To accomplish this mission the program will: conduct capacity building training, identify and assign experienced personnel, and establish and maintain key working relationships with global partners. The program is implemented in partnerships with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Rotary and Canada Public Health Association (CPHA). The STOP program identifies 40-50 well-trained volunteer health professionals to assist national health ministries (MOH), World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF's Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) staff. The program consists of 10 days training and a 3 month field assignment. This occurs in January, May and September each year. Each volunteer provides technical assistance at national and district levels with projects supported by the Global Immunization Division (GID) in areas including polio eradication, measles elimination, routine immunization, data management and communication. The STOP teams provide technical assistance in the form of basic training, evaluation, and supportive skills in epidemiology and surveillance. STOP volunteers are required to participate in 10 days of field training regarding the latest immunization information. In addition, the STOP staff also provides data managers with a 4-day training component, and communications specialists with a 2-day communications training component. The training is conducted to ensure capacity-building skills and technical assistance abilities for all participants are in optimal condition. In collaboration with WHO and UNICEF field offices all over the world, STOP participants work at the national or district level to assist in the implementation of local immunization program objectives, which include polio eradication, measles elimination, data management, routine immunization and social mobilization projects.
