Description
DESC invites expressions of interest from other potential offerors. Any firms desiring consideration must fully identify, in writing, their capabilities to deliver diesel and jet fuels from algal oils by the contract start date of June 1, 2009. Expressions of interest are due by May 1, 2009. The Defense Energy Support Center is exploring the method of using applied research and development to convert algal oils into diesel and jet fuels. This is the proprietary process of Solazyme to produce crude oil from a variety of domestically grown plant feedstocks (including various molecular sugars, including cellulosics and organic waste streams) through the medium of algae that can be further refined into military grade diesel and jet fuel. The production will support the Navy’s requirements for their certification program for F-76 fuel derived from oil produced by algae grown using a heterotrophic process. The outcome of this project is to facilitate the increased production capacity of domestically produced renewable biofuels. Under the authority of FAR 6.302, this requirement has been identified for non-competitive contract action. Solazyme is identified as the only source capable of converting algal oils into diesel and jet fuels from a variety of domestically grown plant feedstocks. It is DESC’s intent to enter into a contractual arrangement with Solazyme. DESC invites expressions of interest from other potential offerors. Any firms desiring consideration must fully identify, in writing, their capabilities to deliver diesel and jet fuels from algal oils by the contract start date of June 1, 2009. Expressions of interest are due by May 1, 2009.
