Description
The purpose of amendment two (2) is to answer to recent questions regarding the solicitation or concerns from interested parties. The following questions have been submitted to the NIST office. 1. The specs for this cluster machine do not stipulate any particular vendor’s equipment so we would like to know if we can respond with other Brands. Response: There is no restriction on brand name(s) being offered. 2. What comprises the “cluster”? Are you requesting 14 nodes or do you want 14 nodes with storage? Response: NIST requires 14 nodes. Storage will be local to each node using the SATA drives listed in the requirements. 3. What is the rational for 1.5TB SATA desktop-class hard drive? Is this a requirement or would you consider others? Response: The 1.5TB SATA desktop-class is a minimum specification; enterprise class drives are not required. 4. Is there a preference for INTEL or AMD? Response: No. The processor simply needs to meet or exceed the minimum requirements specified in the solicitation. 5. The compute nodes call out for QTY 14 which is clear but under the individual item quantity’s you list QTY 2 x 2U chassis. Please clarify. Response: Each node shall be in a single (2U) chassis. 6. The drive sizes are to be 1TB or larger listed on the compute node but in the below section QTY 90 1.5TB drives are requested. Where the 1.5TB drives are going? Response: All drives will go into computer nodes. The drives shall be 1TB or larger. 7. For your 48 port Ethernet switch do you want none blocking and Scalable? Response: This cluster will be in a single rack and the switch only needs to support these nodes. Each node will have dual gigabit Ethernet links. The remaining ports will support either node management or uplink/crosslink to other systems. NIST doesn’t require a managed switch. 8. Have you considered Infiniband for your MPI traffic? Response: NIST’s minimum requirements are those specified in the solicitation. 9. Do you already have master node in place? Response: No, one of these nodes being procured will act as the master. 10. AMD or Intel? The Nahalem is Quad core and the Istambul is 6 core? 2GHz or faster what is your preference? Response: No restriction applies to brand name offered. The minimum requirement is: Quad-core, 2.3 ghz or higher. 11. 40 Cat 6 cables why? Response: NIST requires two Cat6 cables to connect the nodes at reliable gigabit rates, plus an additional per node for management (if node management requires an additional connection) 12. Why 2U Chassis? Normal compute nodes are 1U with 4 x removable drives. Response: NIST intends to put at least four of the 1TB (or larger) drives in each node, in addition to the system disk. If the Offeror can fit this requirement in a 1U chassis, then that would be acceptable. 13. Item List table is amended as follows: 3 cat 6 cables per compute node. 14. Please list more details on the rack you wish to get. If you only list 42 or 44U, vendors will deliver junk. I want to make sure you are getting high quality gear so please offer a minimum brand like the following. http:// www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=AR3100 if you do not vendors will ship low quality parts. Response: NIST’s minimum requirements are those stated in the solicitation. It is up to the offeror to propose a solution that at least meets those minimum requirements.
