Description
Under authority of Public law 105-391 (Section 418) the National Park Service announces the limited availability of a Commercial Use Authorization (CUA) for the following service: guided tours on the inspection walkway beneath the New River Gorge Bridge. One competitive CUA will be issued based the following evaluation criteria: resource protection, ability to operate safely, past performance, relevant experience, qualifications and experience of key personnel, reasonableness of rates, and business capability. The New River Gorge Bridge is within the National Park Service boundary of the New River Gorge National River but is owned and maintained by the West Virginia Department of Transportation as part of the controlled access right of way for U.S. Route 19. With a length of 3,030 feet, the Bridge was for many years the longest bridge in the world of its type. The arch extends 1,700 feet and carries U.S. Highway 19 over the New River at a height of 876 feet, making it the highest vehicular bridge in the Americas, and the second-highest in the world. The inspection walkway underneath the road provides a unique and engaging perspective of the resource and an experience unlike any other in the United States. All New River Gorge National River guided tour activities must begin and end outside of the Park boundary, are for the incidental use of park area resources, and may not authorize solicitation of customers, sales or payment for commercial services to take place within the park area: all of these activities must occur outside of the park area. All applications must be received no late 4:30 pm (EST), Monday, July 6, 2009 Further information and a complete application package may be obtained by contacting: Paul Menard, (304) 465-6521, paul_menard@nps.gov, New River Gorge National River, P.O. Box 246, Glen Jean, WV 25846
