License rights may be issued on an exclusive or nonexclusive basis and may include specific fields of use. PNNL may also be available to licensee(s) to assist in further research and development of the technology under a sponsored research agreement or CRADA program. THE TECHNOLOGY: Intermetallic Aluminide Coatings on Steels. A new method of aluminizing steels has been developed that is low-cost and simple to perform. This new method involves mixing a preceramic polymer precursor with aluminum metal-flake powders and heating in an inert environment or in air. This report covers both the new method and the aluminide layer formed by the method. The polymer is a liquid and when combined with the AI-flake powders it forms liquid slurry that can be applied to a metal object by dipping, painting, or air-spraying. This liquid slurry is then activated using a commercial Ru-based catalyst to allow polymer cross-linking to readily occur during a low-temperature curing process, which also serves to dry the slurry into a green state. After curing the green-state layer is converted to an aluminide diffusion layer on the surface of the steel, where it diffuses into the steel about 10 to 100 microns, by heating in air, nitrogen, or argon at temperatures ranging from 700 C to 900 C. The aluminide coating is an excellent corrosion resistant coating to prevent general corrosion, oxidation, carburization, or sulfidation. This process will form a protective aluminide layer on any steel or alloy that contains Fe, Cr, or Ni. Patent Pending. Please see published US Patent Application 2006-0177686. For all inquiries, please reference IPID 14648. NOTE: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Any company interested in licensing this technology must respond with a letter of interest (may be submitted by e-mail) no later than thirty (30) days from the publication date of this Notice summarizing the company’s business and technical expertise and motivation for pursuing this opportunity. Companies deemed appropriate will be provided with further information on the technology. Such information may require an executed Nondisclosure Agreement. Respondents wishing to enter into negotiations for a commercial license will be required to submit a business plan for the commercialization of the technology prior to licensee(s) selection and negotiations. Please send letters of interest to the attention of the POC identified within this Notice, referencing IPID 14648.
