- INVENTION SUMMARY: Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC (BEA) has submitted a patent application for a continuous liquid loop process to produce and recover the medical isotope cesium 131 using barium 130 or natural barium as a feedstock. Cesium 131 brachytherapy implant seeds are used for radiation treatment of prostate cancer. BEA's process significantly limits any undesirable production of Cs-132; produces a higher purity product; reduces radioactive waste; and eliminates time and cost of reactor target preparation, cooling time, target dissolution and separation steps. Fewer and simplified process steps lowers total operating costs and provides a shorter processing cycle time. Faster recovery of the Cs-131 results in less product being lost to decay. BEA is seeking industrial partners interested in entering into a license agreement for the purpose of commercializing the technology described below.
