- Description
- Special Notice DARPA-SN-09-48: 7-Day Biodefense Proposers' Day Workshop, DATE: July 20, 2009; REGISTRATION DEADLINE: July 15, 2009; TECHNICAL POC: Dr. Michael Callahan, DARPA/DSO, Email: callahanmeeting@darpa.mil; URL: www.darpa.mil/dso/solicitations/solicit.htm The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is hosting a Proposers' Day Workshop for 7-Day Biodefense that will provide critical information on the program vision, the program milestones, and opportunities associated with the development of an interdisciplinary team to respond to a DARPA Broad Agency Announcement (BAA), DARPA-BAA-09-43. The goal of 7-Day Biodefense is to revolutionize the speed of our response to pathogens through investments in novel technologies that will prevent infection, extend survival rates until a cure is available, provide transient immunity, and speed the onset of adaptive immunity to pathogens. DARPA seeks to develop highly innovative approaches to counter any known, unknown, naturally occurring, and engineered pathogens. This program will focus on four Technical Areas: Prevent Infection; Sustain Survival; Provide Transient Immunity; and Create Persistent Immunity. Each proposal must respond to only one of these technical areas and provide an aggressive research schedule with milestones that demonstrate a clear path to achieving the end of phase metric. There will be a Live Fire Test in Areas Three (Provide Transient Immunity) and Four (Create Persistent Immunity) to demonstrate capability against a DARPA-designated unknown biological agent in an animal model. Novel approaches that obviate traditional approaches and rate-limiting steps are of particular interest (e.g. pathogen isolation, culture, identification, antigen processing by the immune system, and onset of adaptive immunity). This program is seeking pre-clinical validation only. Human clinical trials are specifically excluded. Also excluded from consideration is research that results in incremental and evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice (e.g. PAPR/MOPS, HEPA filters, ventilator/mask technologies, and use of traditional post-exposure antibiotics). The 7-Day Biodefense Proposers' Day Workshop will be held at The Executive Conference Center, 3601 Wilson Blvd, Suite 600, Arlington, VA 22201, 9:00am-4:30pm EST, July 20, 2009. The goals of the teaming and information session are to: (a) introduce the research community (industry, academia, and Government) to the 7-Day Biodefense program vision and goals; (b) explain the mechanics of a DARPA program and the milestones and metrics of this particular effort; and (c) encourage and promote teaming arrangements among potential organizations that have the relevant expertise, facilities, and capabilities for executing a research and development program responsive to the 7-Day Biodefense program goals. The teaming and information session will include overview presentations by Government personnel and poster sessions (posters presented by potential proposers) to facilitate interaction and team building among the session participants. Additionally, a teaming website will be provided to facilitate these interactions and can be found at http://www.sainc.com/7DayTeaming. Potential participants should note that formation of teams with sufficient expertise to address all aspects within each technical area described in the BAA will be critical to the success of the 7-Day Biodefense program. DARPA will not be funding individual component technologies that do not fully address the technical area requirements. In order to facilitate communications, interactions, and teaming discussions, 7-Day Biodefense Proposers' Day participants are strongly encouraged to submit a two-slide PowerPoint presentation depicting their organization's capability areas, along with a poster illustrating similar strengths for presentation during the poster session. Workshop details including registration, poster session, meeting location, and lodging are provided on the registration website at https://www.enstg.com/Signup/default.cfm (conference code: DAR65291). There is no registration fee for the 7-Day Biodefense Proposers' Day Workshop. Registration is limited (maximum 100 people; 1 person per organization) by the venue capacity. The Poster Session will be limited to 1 poster per organization, with poster size limited to 3x4 square feet per poster. The registration deadline is 4:00PM ET, July 15, 2009 or until capacity is reached. For any questions related to this effort please e-mail callahanmeeting@darpa.mil. Please refer to the 7-Day Biodefense Proposers' Day Workshop (DARPA-SN-09-48) in all correspondence. This announcement is not a request for proposals; any so sent will be returned.
