- Description
- The purpose of this Modification/Amendment 1 to DARPA-SN-09-47: Hybrid Multi-Material Rotor (HMMR) Workshop is to revise the Secruity Clearence submission instructions: Special Notice DARPA-SN-09-47: Hybrid Multi-Material Rotor (HMMR) Workshop; WORKSHOP DATE: July 21, 2009; REGISTRATION DEADLINE: July 14, 2009; TECHNICAL POC: CAPT Duane Ashton, DARPA/DSO Email: DARPA-SN-09-47@darpa.mil; URL: http://www.sa-meetings.com/HMMR2009 The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is hosting a workshop to discuss innovative research to enable revolutionary advances for the rapid development and demonstration of lightweight, high-performance multi-material rotors for current and future US Navy Submarine applications. The ultimate goal is to develop and demonstrate multi-physics performance prediction tools and multi-material manufacturing processes that can be successfully transitioned to the US Navy to improve performance and reduce weight and development costs of current and next-generation submarine rotors. A large percentage of the acquisition cost of legacy US Navy submarine rotors is associated with non-recurring design, analysis, test, and evaluation iterations required to demonstrate the rotor’s performance. These rotors are designed to simultaneously address multiple demanding maritime operational environment requirements using proprietary, uncoupled special-purpose domain codes (e.g., structural and hydrodynamic codes). The current uncoupled nature of these legacy tool-sets is considered to be an impediment to shortening the rotor design cycle due to their inability to rapidly and accurately predict rotor off-design performance (e.g., during standard maneuvers, crash-back, backing, and crash-ahead operations). Legacy US Navy submarine rotors are manufactured from Nickel-Aluminum-Bronze (NAB). Although NAB material properties are well-understood, the dynamic performance and weight of NAB rotors are dictated by the rotor geometry. Tailored multi-material (both organic and inorganic) systems offer the opportunity to provide improved dynamic performance and weight reduction unachievable with NAB. However, transformational improvements in rotor design, analysis, and multi-material manufacturing methods are needed to exploit the potential benefits of multi-material rotors. The Hybrid Multi-Materials Rotor Workshop will be held at the Liberty Conference Center, 4075 Wilson Blvd, Suite 300, Arlington, VA, 22201. There is no registration fee. Details on the workshop, including registration and clearance submission information, can be found at the following URL: www.sa-meetings.com/HMMR2009. The password for login is: Submarines. Registration is limited by the venue capacity (maximum of 100 people, maximum 2 from each institution). The registration cutoff date is July 14, 2009, or at attendance capacity, whichever comes first. If there is additional space available after the registration deadline, institutions will be permitted to add participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. Further questions about the workshop should be directed to DARPA-SN-09-47@darpa.mil. Please refer to the HMMR Workshop in any correspondence. This announcement is not a request for proposals; any so sent will be returned. Nor does this announcement guarantee any funding should a Broad Agency Announcement be published related to these workshops. Point of Contact CAPT Duane Ashton, DARPA/DSO; Email: DARPA-SN-09-47@darpa.mil. Due to the classified nature of the event, all participants are required to pre-register and must have at least an active DoD SECRET Clearance to attend the workshop. Participants must register and have their Security Office submit a Visit Request Form NLT 4 pm EST July 14, 2009, in order to attend. Visit Request Forms are to be submitted via FAX to Han Ripley, Facility Security Officer, at 703-797-4575, or JPAS to SMO Code 446095. Please include the subject "HMMR Workshop" in all submissions and correspondence. The workshop will be conducted at the classified SECRET level. *The use of the word “rotor(s)” in this document is synonymous with “propeller(s)”.
