Description
The project is located within the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, which is adjacent to the City of Lawton, Oklahoma and the Fort Sill Army Base. This project consists of the placement of fills on both sides of an existing 2-mile asphalt paved road (Six Mile Scenic Road) to provide additional width, and the construction of paved shoulders along both sides of the road. A double 10-foot by 5-foot concrete box culvert will be extended in place to match the new widths, along with the construction of new headwalls and wingwalls. Other circular metal culverts along the route will need to be extended. In order to perform the widening, both edges of the existing pavment must be saw cut along most of the length. Also included in the project are the replacement of guardrails and guardrail end terminals, grouted riprap at the culvert extensions, and the replacement of permanent signs. After the widening and paved shoulders are completed, the entire roadway surface will be treated with a 3/8-inch modified slurry seal. In addition to the road work described above, a prefabricated single span steel pedestrian bridge, 140-feet in length, will be constructed at the Elk Mountain Campground area of the Refuge. Other work associated with the bridge construction includes the removal of an existing small pedestrian bridge in the same area, the placement of loose Class 5 riprap at the new bridge abutments, and the use of concrete formliner, which will be painted, on the bridge abutments. The deck of the new bridge will be poured and finished concrete. Construction can be performed year-round. The project is anticipated to begin in late summer 2009, and should take six months to complete. The estimated price is between $1 and $2 million.
