- Description
- Question: I would like you to better define for us what tasks are envisionedin "range clearance." Answer: Range clearance generally includes all activities associated with theremoval of explosives hazards within a defined area to a defined depth. Typical range clearance tasks include the following: - Land surveying to delineate the clearance area- Vegetation removal to gain access to the surface and subsurface typicallyincluding the removal of vegetation and trees up to 3" in diameter.- Surface clearance to remove munitions fragments, UXO, range debris, anddiscarded fragments- Geophysical detection and marking of subsurface metallic anomalies typicallyeither using hand-held magnetometers or man-portable/towed digitalelectromagnetic geophysical mapping devices- Subsurface removal of suspected explosive hazards typically accomplished bymanual excavation.- Quality control of the subsurface clearance. Additional tasks that might be included in a range clearance project wouldinclude the following:- Vegetation removal of all trees and undergrowth to open up line of sightbetween firing and target positions. This task if accomplished roboticallywould eliminate the need to first perform UXO clearance.- Removal of the top 4-6" of soil from future construction footprints therebyremoving the heaviest metallic fragment concentration mechanically therebyreducing the cost to clear explosive hazards from the remaining subsurface.
