Scope of Work Marinship Exhibit Collections Assessment San Francisco Bay Model Visitor Center Sausalito, CA General 1.1 Statement of Work - The Contractor shall provide all labor, materials, equipment, travel, and facilities required to properly assess the condition and make recommendations for conservation of all original objects made of, but not limited to, paper, textiles, leather clothing, watercolors, metal and plastic, wood, painted surfaces, photographs and other items housed in the Marinship 1942*1945 exhibit at the San Francisco Bay Model Visitor Center, Sausalito, CA. 1.2 Contracting Officer. The term "Contracting Officer" means the person executing This contract on behalf of the Government and any other officer or civilian employee who is properly designated Contracting Officer. This term includes the authorized representative of a Contracting Officer acting within the limits of his/her authority. •1.3 Background. The Marinship exhibit is located inside the San Francisco Bay Model Visitor Center, a WWII-era building originally used for warehouse storage of the Marinship Shipyard. The San Francisco Bay Model was built in 1956-57 as a 3-dimensional hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay estuary, and is owned and operated by the San Francisco District, US Army Corps of Engineers. The Marinship exhibit interprets the development and impact of the shipyard built by Bechtel Corporation during WWII on the Sausalito Waterfront. •1.4 Existing Conditions. The Marinship exhibit was installed in 1986 and is approximately 2,655 square feet of exhibit space. It is a series of large enclosed, plexi-glass cases, supported by a steel angle iron structure, (see photos in Attachment A). The exhibit is inside the main building which is not temperature, dust or humidity controlled. The cases are loosely assembled boxes that allow ambient dust, air, humidity and temperature to be freely exchanged from outside to inside the cases. Lighting is low voltage halogen fixtures that are not adjusted for lighting textiles or paper. It is assumed that the lighting is not appropriate for illuminating of fragile or easily degraded objects. •1.5 Objects. Approximately 192 original objects are World War II era and comprise a mix of materials noted below. •1.6 Approximate object type and quantities : •1.7 Metal- 61 Paper - 72 Leather- 9 Fabric- 18 Photographs- 4 Plastic- 4 Lithographs/Prints- 2 Watercolors- 3 Oils- 4 Painted surfaces - 1 Rubber- 5 1.6 Deliverables •· Written preliminary examination report evaluating condition of items in each exhibit case. •· Proposed treatment for item examined and determined to require treatment •· Description of limitations of treatment •· Estimate of the treatment costs and duration •· Recommendations to exhibit design and fabrication modifications to assure continued preservation of original materials. This may include recommendation for removal if necessary. •· Estimated cost for exhibit modifications 1.7 Technical Qualifications. The Contractor shall demonstrate competency in each of the areas listed below: •· training •· length of professional experience •· scope of practice (whether conservation is primary activity) •· experience in surveying and conservation of a wide variety of objects typically constructed, or manufactured during World War II as listed in Clause 1.5 above. •· involvement in conservation organizations •· availability •· references and previous clients Location: The Marinship exhibit is available for general viewing inside the San Francisco Bay Model Visitor Center, 2100 Bridgeway, Sausalito, CA. Visitor center hours are Tuesday- Saturday, 9 am - 4 pm.
