- Description
- Sauls Creek Fuels Reduction Project. Masticate approximately 766 acres on National Forest Service Land. Mowing would be accomplished with mechanical equipment such as a Hydro-ax fitted with various mastication heads. Oak woodlands would be treated to remove 40 to 60% of the oak and brush stems within a given treatment unit. Mowing treatments would be designed to create larger openings and increase the distance between clumps, thereby reducing horizontal fuel continuity. A mosaic of the larger, more mature oak would be retained to benefit wildlife, create diversity within the vegetation, and enhance visual aesthetics. Density of oak brush to be mowed beneath forested stands will entail removing 60-80% of the oak and brush stems. Some small pockets of ponderosa pine trees less than 12' dbh will need to be mowed. 523 acres are identified as base units. If additional funding becomes available, 243 acres have been identified and are referred to as optional units. This project is set aside for those contractors with a current BLM Fuel Reduction IDIQ contract.
