Description
ASSESSMENT OF CANINE DETECTION FOR HLB AND CITRUS CANKER Statement of Work: This is a continuation of an ongoing project of canine detection of citrus canker and HLB and demonstration of the feasibility of the use of canines to detect these diseases. We will assess the efficacy of finding citrus canker and HLB in the field by using canines to detect the disease, with the aim to detect infections prior to visual symptoms, based upon our prior positive experience with using dogs for disease detection. First the team will investigate the use of canines for detection of HLB and CC in a grove survey simulation. Known positive and negative trees will be put in close proximity to each other, and the two assay techniques will be tested against one another. Replicated tests will be conducted to determine the statistical reliability of both canine and estimate the proportion of false negative and false positive detections via Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analyses. Replicated tests will also be run to determine the maximum effective range of the canine, as well as minimal threshold levels of detection. Replicated studies will be undertaken to investigate the use of canines in the detection of various lesion ages of canker infection, as well as fruit vs. foliar infections, and detection on differing cultivars of citrus. And tests will be conducted to determine optimal deployment strategies for using the canines in real world situations, both in grove settings, packinghouses, and in the detection of dooryard tree contamination. Description of the service provided: Provides care housing and food for two canines for a period of one year Provides veterinary care for two canines for one year Provides travel/fuel expenses for fieldwork -- multiple visits throughout the year Provides training for two canines including all handler costs.
