Title: Captive feeding trials to improve the use of fatty acids and stable isotopes for diet determination in polar bears Goals: The goals of this project are to: 1.Conduct feeding experiments with captive brown bears over a 6 week period to:a.Estimate isotopic fractionation values and fatty acid coefficients that are representative of tissue deposition occurring in wild polar bears. b.Determine the potential effects of variation in dietary protein to fat intake and fasting behavior on these values. Objectives: The above goals will be accomplished by using brown bears as a model species and conducting controlled, captive feeding experiments to estimate stable isotope fractionation values, fatty acid coefficients, and the role of fasting and protein:fat ratios in affecting those values. Bears will consume diets representative of those consumed by wild polar bears. The contractor will conduct these experiments and provide the data in the form of an excel spreadsheet via email or on a CD and mail the samples (blood, hair, claw shavings, fat biopsies, and diet samples) to US Fish and Wildlife Service. Interested parties wishing to respond to the forthcoming solicitation are encouraged to visit www.fbo.gov often and download related solicitation information.
