- Description
- BACKGROUND The Office of Medical Services has a need to provide Continuing Medical Education (CME) in Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) and American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) to the foreign service medical professionals located at posts. The CALS program is an educational program with a primary focus to train medical personnel in a team approach to anticipate, recognize, and treat life-threatening emergencies and stabilize patients presenting with a wide range of undifferentiated emergency situations. It is especially designed to be beneficial to more isolated health care providers who may lack many forms of technical equipment and on-sight specialist help. All participants will be provided training to complete requirements for BLS provider and instructor course completion cards. Foreign Service medical professionals will be provided training to complete the renewal for ACLS providers. All participants in the CME will receive BLS and ACLS training and some components of the CALS refresher training. The Foreign Service medical providers will receive a comprehensive review of the CALS universal approach, a pharmacology review, review of rapid sequence intubation (RSI) and difficult airway techniques, triaging of multiple patients, treatment of blast and burn injuries, and toxicology. Over the years, this program has been tailored to meet MED’s unique needs. The Office of Medical Services has incorporated the use of a CALS Trauma Bag including a comprehensive array of emergency supplies in about 100 of our health units overseas. OBJECTIVE The objective of this Task Order is for The University of Minnesota/Department of Emergency Medicine to instruct medical professionals on the ACLS and BLS guidelines (developed by the American Heart Association). To provide education and training to medical professionals working at our overseas posts and to provide continuing medical education credits needed for them to maintain their licenses. The course will cover the core concepts from all of the advanced life support courses as well as topics not covered in most other training programs such as advanced airway management and teamwork. 3.SCOPE The scope of this task order is for CALS and the Department of Emergency Medicine to provide qualified instructors and instruction for the CME conferences in Bangkok from January 27-February 2, 2010 and in Berlin from April 14-21, 2010. The Comprehensive Advanced Life Support program will development a course, geared to the needs of the department’s medical professionals. The training center for the American Heart Association U of MN affiliate will provide ACLS and BLS instructors who will travel to each of the conferences for hands on learning. The instructors will provide learning materials to the participants to include ACLS provider pin numbers for on-line training and testing, ACLS pocket guides, ACLS Instructor Handbooks, and ACLS and BLS cards. CALS will also provide materials needed for the trauma training and LES First Aid training.
