Description
National Aeronautical & Space Administration (NASA) and the Goddard Space FlightCenter (GSFC) has a requirement for the continuation of the Global PrecipitationMeasurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) instrument Number One. The GMI Instrument is a13 Channel radiometer whose core science measures the Earths atmospheric moisture. The13 science channels cover 10.65 GHz through 183 GHz in the microwave spectrum. In orderto fulfill this requirement, NASA/GSFC is utilizing American Recovery and ReinvestmentAct (ARRA) funds to provide for key elements of the GMI Mission through September 6, 2009through June 5, 2010. The GMI Instrument will provide Improved measurements of rainfall for research intoclimatology by allowing scientist and weather professional to better predict weatherassessments not only for the United States and its Territories a, but will also providefor Global weather assessments. The GMI mission is a universal tool that will be used byall nations to better understand and predict weather conditions and to plan for severeweather conditions through the globe. The performance elements that will be covered under the American Recovery andReinvestment Act of 2009 include:Completing 70% of the Instrument Card Assembly (ICA) builds; Completing set up of thenear field antenna range; Completing engineering model antenna range measurements;Preparing antenna field procedures for flight instrument; Releasing all remainingdrawings for GMI instrument; Completing build Receive Hot Load Core and be ready forhigher level assembly; Completing 50% of Radio Frequency (RF) receivers build and test;Fabricating and certifying all electrical ground equipment needed though delivery of theinstrument; Fabricating and certifying 85% of the instrument mechanical ground equipmentrequired to deliver the instrument; Completing building of fully qualified flightReflector Deployment Assembly; Completing building of fully qualified flight Main andCold sky reflectors; Completing building of all main structure components and proceedingwith integration; Completing 50% build and test of flight feed horns and start initialintegration.Ball Aerospace & Technology Corporation is performing these key elements under theexisting contract that awarded on March 22, 2005 in a competitive procurement.CurrentlyBall Aerospace is the only corporation currently capable of meeting NASA/GSFC spacecraftrequirements for the GPM Mission.
