Description
RFI for PMTs for LBNE The new Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) will consist of a new high power, high energy neutrino beam situated at Fermilab (near Chicago, Illinois), a near detector located on the Fermilab site (Batavia, Illinois) to calibrate the beam of neutrinos near the source, and a very large detector located 1,000 to 2,000 km from the source. The far detector is planned to have an active volume of 300,000 tons of water, and it will be situated 1.5 km underground to reduce the backgrouind from cosmic rays that strike the Earth's surface. The far detector for the LBNE will be part of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) at the old Homesake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota. The Water Containment Vessels (WCV) will be located 4,850 feet below ground and will be instrumented each with a large number of Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs) or other appropriate light sensors as the active devices used to record physics events. The technical points to be addressed by respondents are as follows: 1) Photon detection efficency 2) Single photon response 3) Spurious signals 4) Electrical connection 5) Long term electrical stability 6) Mechanical robustness 7) Ultra-pure water compatibility 8) Testing 9) Safety 10) Manufacturing and delivery. Firms must have five (5) or more years experience in the deign and production of Photodetectors in order to respond to this Request for Information (RFI). The example in the RFI is for ~67,000 PMTs per cavity and with three (3) cavities, the total quantity is approximately 201,000 PMTs. Again, this is only an example but not the exact number at this time. Please contact Robert F. Cibic at bcibic@fnal.gov or (630) 840-3528 for a complete copy of the RFI.
