Description
NAVFAC Washington Contractor Partner You are invited to attend the NAVFAC Washington Safety Symposium on March 31, 2010 at the Catering and Conference Center, Building 221, located at the Washington Navy Yard. While the overall mishap rates for NAVFAC Washington employees and our contractor partners have been much lower than industry averages, in recent months we have experienced one tragic fatality and several significant near misses in our construction and base operating support contracts. To quote the Commander of NAVFAC, Rear Admiral Greg Shear, "There is no activity that NAVFAC performs or administers where benefits outweigh risks of loss of life." With more than 100 contractors working at our 18 supported installations, I have witnessed a wide variety of safety programs (some excellent and some lacking) and I have seen where engagement from corporate leadership made substantial positive impact in the safety performance of companies doing work for the Navy. During the Symposium, I will share my thoughts on creating and maintaining a safe working environment and emphasize the command's Safety SPOT check program. Annapolis has the most mature Safety SPOT check program and our senior leadership from the Naval Academy and a few of your colleagues will speak about their experiences. There will be a facilitated discussion period and an awards ceremony at the end of the event. Please contact Larry Carpenter at (202) 685-8188 or email him at: Larry.W.Carpenter@navy.mil by 29 March with your RSVP. Firms are limited to four representatives per company as space is limited. The target audience for the Symposium is company principles accompanied by your safety professionals. I appreciate your personal attention to improving safety conditions and performance and look forward to seeing you at the WNY Catering & Conference Center on March 31st. Sincerely,R. HemstreetCaptain, CEC, U.S. NavyCommanding Officer
