- Description
- RECOVERY: "Lung Health Study (LHS)" - This is a case-cohort study of approximately 2,170 symtomatic asthma cases and 2,430 randomly selected cohort member controls from the "Agriculture Health Study", and will be based in Iowa and North Carolina. The LHS is introduced as a within scope modification No 0014 under contract HHSN291200555546C with Social and Scientific Systems, Inc. The aims of the study are to examine the relationship between pesticide and farm exposure and the development and severity of asthma, allergens, and genetic susceptibility to asthma. Asthma is a major public health problem and its complications can be severe. Farmers have high rates of morbidity and mortality. Farmers early life exposures to endotoxins may change their later response to farm exposure asthma triggers. This study will help to understand the interactions between pesticides and asthma in farmers. The original contract was competed as a small business set-aside. A Cost Plus Fixed Fee (CPFF) contract was appropriate because the uncertainties involved in contract performance do not permit costs to be estimated with sufficient confidence to permit the use of any type of fixed price contract (FAR 16.302-1).
