- University of Kansas, Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) will provideNASA with a unique, custom built and designed cryospheric radar suite which includesthree radars necessary for mapping the bed topography of ice sheets, determining snowthickness on sea ice and monitoring the near surface firn layers on ice sheets. Theseradars are necessary to meet Operation IceBridge science objectives and is the only radarsuite that is adapted to fly on the NASA P-3 (a propeller airplane) and DC-8 (a jetairplane). This procurement action will require CReSIS to deploy, operate and maintaintheir custom built suite of three radars for the Operation Ice Bridge Greenland 2010aircraft campaign which will begin in March2010. The Greenland campaign is a series offlights designed to monitor the dynamic areas of the arctic sea ice and Greenland icesheet during the data gap between ICESat-1 andICESat-2, which will not launch until the2014 timeframe. The Cryosphere, including land ice and sea ice are essential areas tomonitor in a warming climate. This requirement also includes the processing of the radardata by CReSIS with their custom processing algorithms and the release of Level 1-B(geolocated radar echograms)data to the IceBridge Science Team three months after thecompletion of the campaign. CReSIS has already gathered data for Operation IceBridge inthe Antarctic 2009 Campaign. No other University or Company has the unique custom builtthree radar suite of instruments developed by CReSIS which includes the capabilities ofimaging fast flowing, rapidly changing glaciers, snow thickness on sea ice and nearsurface firn over the ice sheets. CReSIS has unique UHF (Ultrahigh-frequency)and VHF(Very high-frequency) airborne radars for imaging the near surface firn and snow depth onsea ice at a very high vertical resolution (5 cm). Because CReSIS has designed, developedand built these one of a kind instruments for cryospheric applications and adapted themto the NASA planes, they are the only qualified personnel to operate the instruments inthe field and are the only qualified personnel to repair the instruments.
