The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML), Hamilton, Montana has a requirement for the packaging, transportation, and disposal of hazardous waste. Discrete chemical wastes streams generated by RML's biomedical research activities tend to be small in volume and often contain exotic chemical compounds and complex mixtures. RML laboratories and support activities annually generate approximately 600 to 700 containers of non-radioactive solid and liquid waste, usually ranging in volume from five milliliters to twenty liters. Approximately 1400 Liters (400 gallons) of chemical wastes are collected annually in satellite containers, ranging in size from 1 gallon to 5 gallons.
