Description
Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC (SRNS), managing contractor of the Savannah River Site (SRS) for the Department of Energy, solicits expressions of interest from companies wishing to license a new development in railroad personnel safety, the Railcar Switchman Platform. Engineers at the Savannah River Site (SRS) have devised a new a new railcar switchman platform for enhanced safety of railroad personnel. The switchman platform is designed to attach to the railcar ladder providing a stable platform from which the switchman can perform their duties. Under normal operations railcars are pushed or shoved by the locomotive and a switchman is required to ride on the lead car to flag and provide watch for the locomotive engineer. These functions normally require the switchman to ride on the ladder attached to the side of the railcar. With the switchman platform, which can be attached to the railcar ladder, it provides a stable platform upon which the switchman can ride in a normal standing position. Performing these duties in a standing position allows the switchman greater stability and hands-free operation to operate the emergency brake, radio, or provide flag signals to the engineer. The attached handrails allow the switchman to work independently of the ladder and face in any direction. In addition the platform is designed to provide standard clearances for the platform while in use. The configuration allows it to be close to the railcar for horizontal clearances and high enough to clear standard manual switch equipment. Savannah River Site has 64 miles of railroad on site and this equipment has been designed, developed, and successfully deployed for railroad shipment operations at SRS since 2008. A patent has been filed on this invention with the US Patent and Trademark Office. Any company interested in licensing this device and commercializing it as a product must respond with a letter of interest (may be submitted by email) no later that 30 days from the publication date of this Notice summarizing the company's business and technical expertise and motivation for pursuing this opportunity. Qualified companies will be provided with further information on the technology. Questions and expressions of interest may be addressed to the Point of Contact identified in this Notice. This is not a procurement; it is a request for parties interested in Licensing this invention only. Original Point of Contact Dale K. Haas (803) 725-4185, fax: (803) 725-4988, email: dale.haas@srnl.doe.gov or address: Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC, Building 773-41A, Room #238, Aiken, SC 29808.
