Description
CDRLs Statement of Objectives Full Solicitation Document The current state of the art in materials and structures requires hypersonic weapon systems rely on non-optimum designs. Thermal protection systems can be used to protect underlying lightweight metal structures from the extreme temperatures of hypersonic flight and limit internal temperature. However, this design approach reduces internal volume and leads to a vehicle that is susceptible to handling damage due to the fragility of thermal protection systems. An alternate design approach substitutes heavy super alloys that can withstand the extreme thermal environment of flight. However, this structural configuration adds weight and produces a thermal short to the interior. These limitations, along with other design issues due to the minimum gage material thicknesses that are necessary, limit the design space for metallic designs. It is proposed that a better design for a high speed missile system would be one that utilizes high temperature composites in the vehicle structure. The optimum structural design might be 100 percent composites or some combination of composites and metals. The primary purpose of this program is to explore advanced designs and materials concepts that have the potential to produce affordable light weight vehicle structures.
