- Description
- To support Operation IceBridge with the studying and monitoring of the changingareas if the Cryosphere, areas of frozen water, including the Earth's ice sheets and seaice glaciers. Operation IceBridge will use airborne platforms to maintain altimetry timeseries and monitor important areas of land ice and sea ice until the launch of NASA'snext satellite-lidar mission. Operation IceBridge will monitor the sea ice extent, snowcover on sea ice, ice sheet elevation, ice sheet sheet near surface firn to monitoraccumulation trend, ice sheet mass balance and the bed topography of the ice sheet usingairborne instruments.
Additionally Operation IceBridge will monitor larger glacier systems that are major orcould become major sources of sea level rise. UAF will use their Riegl LMS-Q240 PulsedScanning Altimeter, a laser altimeter capable of recording surface elevation data, andassociated Global positioning system (GPS) specially adapted for the UAF airplanes tocontinue their monitoring of the Alaskan glaciers that started in the 1990's.
This competitively awarded contract was issued on a cost-no fee basis, due to theresearch and development nature of the work, which is ill-suited to firm fixed pricing.
