- Recovery This notice is provided for information purposes only. NASA LaRCintends to issue a cost plus fixed fee contract to Honeywell International entitledRESEARCH IN VALIDATION AND VERIFICATION OF SAFETY-CRITICAL INTEGRATED DISTRIBUTEDSYSTEMS. The first year of this competitive action will be funded by the AmericanReinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA). The option year effort will be funded by other thanARRA. This award results from a competitive selection under the National Aeronautics andSpace Administration (NASA) Headquarters released NASA Research Announcement (NRA) forfoundational research in support of the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD),entitled 'Research Opportunities in Aeronautics (ROA) 2009 under NNH09ZEA001N, Amendment7-B.6 Verification and Validation of Flight-Critical Systems (VVFCS1), sub-topicVVFCS-1.2 Integrated Distributed Systems. ARMD conducts research across a breadth of coreaeronautics competencies; research in key areas related to the development of advancedaircraft technologies and systems; and research that supports the Next Generation AirTransportation System (NEXTGen), in partnership with the Joint Planning and DevelopmentOffice (JPDO). The JPDO has identified a lack of validation and verification (V&V)methods needed to certify the safety of complex, NextGen systems as a critical gap. As aJPDO member agency, NASA is targeting this critical gap through the verification andValidation of Flight-Critical Systems (VVFCS) initiative in ARMDs Aviation SafetyProgram. The Integrated Distributed Systems research area emphasizes the advancement anddevelopment of V&V methods that meet the challenges for future aviation systems that mustoperate as an integrated network of distributed systems. The objective of this researchis to develop a collection of technologies and mathematical models that enable rigorous,comprehensive analysis of functionally integrated distributed systems interacting throughvarious structures such as communications networks and human-automation and human-humaninteraction. The principal focus is to develop capabilities and supporting evidence toenable defensible, explicit assurance claims concerning safety implications introduced bytechnological advances in distributed aviations systems. The referenced solicitation is a broad agency announcement as specified in FAR 35.016 andNFS 1835.016.
