Description
DESCRIPTION: Battelle Pacific Northwest Division (Battelle), Management and Operating Contractor of the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is requesting information from prospective Offerors of high performance scientific computing systems. INFORMATION REQUESTED: Information requested from potential Offerors is part of a market research effort to understand potential configurations and the full costs of operating high performance computing systems running scientific applications in energy efficient data centers. Please address each draft specification by number, providing the most detailed information available for each requirement. This RFI is issued for information and planning purposes only and does not constitute a solicitation. Battelle does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this RFI, or to otherwise pay for information received in response to this RFI. Battelle will determine Request for Proposal specifications based on EMSL's final technical and financial requirements. Please provide your questions or need for further information as well as your expression of interest to the attention of the point of contact above. Battelle expects that financial or other considerations for not meeting the final specifications will be required in any contract resulting from the Request for Proposal. The following types of technical, cost, and delivery information are requested: 1. Offerors are requested to provide an indication of interest and all contact information for any resultant Request for Proposal 2. A description of current experience, knowledge, and capabilities directly applicable to the delivery of the state of the art high performance computing and storage system. 3. A short discussion of each specification by number, identifying preliminary design recommendations, potential specification improvements, and any other information considered relevant to final design. 4. Description of features and performance of major components of the system, including but not limited to processor and memory subsystem architecture, interprocess communication features and storage. 5. Description of any other information or options, which could achieve the highest performance and lowest overall cost to Battelle for the desired system design. 6. Power, floor loading, and cooling requirements (in terms of volume of 65 degree chilled water required per unit time), and any recommended facility modifications. 7. Description of cooling solution design and efficiency features. 8. Estimated total system cost. 9. Information concerning current customer installation base for systems similar to that specified. 10. Delivery plan to meet a delivery no later than 3 months ARO. 11. Estimated costs for 3-year onsite hardware support, and estimated out-year onsite maintenance options for year 4 and 5 12. Any other information considered relevant PNNL "MIDRANGE" ENERGY-EFFICIENT HPC SYSTEMS INTRODUCTION Battelle Pacific Northwest Division (Battelle), Management and Operating Contractor of the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) requires quotations and power and cooling requirements for high performance computing systems to understand their performance and environmental characteristics in an energy-efficient data center. Two different systems should be proposed with pricing. Systems priced above $1 million cannot be considered. The first should be a system with an emphasis on high FLOP rates on a conventional scientific workload, located in a data center with 240 volt power. The second should include added mass storage with high storage bandwidth and capacity per FLOP ratio, located in a data center with 480 volt power. Both systems should capable of connecting to existing networked filesystems with 10 gigabit-class connectivity. Both systems will be located in a data center provisioned with 65 degree Fahrenheit chilled water plumbed to headers beneath the floor. The system configuration and pricing of both systems shall include all necessary components to provide room-neutral cooling utilizing the chilled water provided. See "System Specifications below" for further detail on the requested system configurations for this RFI. System specifications System #1 ("conventional" HPC system) and System #2 ("data-driven" HPC system) would be located in separate data centers with overhead cabling and 65 degree chilled water for cooling. Proposed systems may not draw air from under the floor. Preferred systems will have the highest flop/dollar TCO for a 3 year period, including power and cooling costs, based on power cost of 6.5 cents/KWh for system #1 and 3.5 cents/KWh for system #2. System #1 would be located in a data center with 240 volt power, 65 degree chilled water, and overhead power and network cabling. Further requirements: • "Conventional" scientific HPC system with the following minimum requirements: • 4 GB/core RAM capacity • 2 Gbit/sec/core minimum interprocessor communication bandwidth • 2 microsecond maximum interprocessor communication latency System #2 would be located in a data center with 240 volt power, 65 degree chilled water, and overhead power and network cabling. Further requirements: • "Data driven" scientific HPC system with the following minimum requirements: • 8 GB/core RAM capacity • 100 MByte/sec/core minimum disk bandwidth • 100 Gbyte/core minimum disk capacity • 2 Gbit/sec/core minimum interprocessor communication bandwidth • 2 microsecond maximum interprocessor communication latency • 100 Gybte/core minimum storage capacity
