- Description
- The Department of State initiated the Weapons of Mass Destruction Countermeasures Division (DS/SPC/WMD), and assigned it the responsibility for training and equipping all Overseas Posts. A domestic training program was also initiated. The WMD Countermeasures Division provides training and equipment to all personnel falling under the authority of a Chief of Mission in order to aid them in surviving a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) attack. In addition, WMD surveys are conducted to identify post vulnerabilities and potential decontamination sites. DS/SPC/WMD requires the following Handheld radioisotope identification devices meeting the following specifications: 1) Utilize both Sodium Iodide (NaI) and He3 detectors. 2) 1024 Channel spectrometer with an effective gamma energy response range from 20 keV - 3.0 MeV. 3) Capable of measuring doserate from 0.01 urem to 10 rem/h and dose from 0.01 mrem to 100 rem. 4) Must be capable of identifying 80% of the listed radioisotopes provided in Section 6.5.1 of the ANSI N42.34 standard. 5) Capable of single hand operation while wearing gloves. 6) Must be capable of wired and wireless data communication. 7) Must include integrated GPS to mark incident locations. 8) Data storage: Minimum 1 GB. 9) Data output format: ANSI N42.2. 10) Audible, visual and vibration alarm response. 11) 8 hours battery life using the provided battery. 12) Weight: Less than 6 lbs. 13) Must be capable of operating from -20 °C to +50 °C and from 40% to 93% relative humidity at 35 °C.
