Description
We listed the Dwarf Bear Poppy (Arctomecon humilis) as a federally endangered species in 1979 (44 FR 64250). The final rule listing the species cited a restricted gene pool as a threat to the species (44 FR 64251). Two genetic studies have looked at genetic differences over the species as a whole (Van Buren and Harper 1996; Allphin, Windhan and Harper 1998), however these studies either grouped population level DNA into single samples or sampled from a limited distribution of the species, respectively. We are funding a study that will determine whether the species is at risk for inbreeding depression or loss of genetic diversity. The study must also address the relationship amongst Arctomecon humilis, Arctomecon californica, and Arctomecon merriamii The study will determine if there are any populations at risk to inbreeding depression or loss of genetic diversity. The study will also determine whether or not if there is any genetic material exchange between Arctomecon humilis, Arctomecon californica, and Arctomecon merriamii. The data will be used to assess the functionality of the current populations and determine where we need to focus conservation efforts. Researcher(s) must meet U.S. Office of Personnel Management's Standards for both the Genetics Series (0440) and the Botany Series (0430). Researcher(s) must also have specialized experience in the following: 1.Genetic analysis and primer development with Arctomecon 2.Surveying and inventorying for Arctomecon humilis
