- Description
- IFB for card scanning The U.S. Government Printing (GPO) Office's Library Services & Content Management (LSCM) division is seeking to scan and create PDFs of the cards in the GPO historic shelflist. The GPO historic shelflist contains approximately 1,000,000 3 x 5 cards of which approximately 715,000 need to be scanned. The card file that makes up the GPO historic shelflist represents publications that were identified as part of the work of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and the Cataloging and Indexing (C&I) Program which are required by United States Code, Title 44, Sections 1710 and 1711. The shelflist represents bibliographic cataloging activity from ca. 1870s until the shelflist officially closed in October 1992. The shelflist contains over one million 3 x 5 cards arranged in Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) classification order. The cards currently are stored in files at the GPO Headquarters at 732 N. Capitol St. N.W., Washington, D.C. The cards represent bibliographic information for maps, monographs, pamphlets and serials. The majority of cards are in English, but many other languages are represented. All cards are in the Roman alphabet. The information on the cards may be in various fonts, handwritten, typewritten, and/or duplicated with methods such as mimeograph technology. Many cards have handwritten notes in pencil and in ink of various colors. Differently colored cards have been used throughout the years to indicate various stages in the cataloging process. There is a wide variation in the weight and color of card stock used throughout the shelflist and many cards are in fragile condition. Many are soiled in the top ¼ section of the card.
