Description
Micro TLC Kit Image TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Rapid Identification of Explosives Using Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) and Colorimetric Techniques Micro TLC Kit Opportunity : Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to license intellectual property rights covering this technology for commercialization. Background : A new methodology for the separation and identification of explosives using a single TLC plate has been developed at LLNL. LLNL scientists have miniaturized and modernized thin-layer chromatography (TLC), a well-established laboratory procedure that identifies compounds belonging to the same general chemical class. A streamlined sampling and testing protocol has been developed for this new kit that allows rapid, reproducible, separation and identification of the explosives. Description : LLNL scientists have designed a new miniaturized field portable thin-layer chromatography detection kit for of explosives identification by improving field utility to meet first responder requirements. It is a portable set with components designed specifically for rapid identification of explosive compounds. The miniaturized kit employs the use of commercially available plates as the separation medium and a colorimetric identification scheme that is easy to use and provides confirmation the identity of the explosive. Advantages : LLNL's Micro TLC Kit advantages are the separation and identification of known and unknown explosives and their components for military applications including unexploded ordnance, suspect explosive components, pipe bombs, and IEDs. The use of TLC also has the advantage of being able to change the elution solvent and get a different separation pattern. This provides a method to confirm the identity of a suspected explosive without physically changing the type of TLC plate. This is important when there may be a non-explosive material that has the same retention factor as one of the standard explosive compounds. Potential Applications : The Micro TLC Kit is useful for identification of explosives for military, law enforcement, first responders, and forensic applications. Development Status: LLNL has developed a working laboratory prototype and has filed a Provisional Patent application for this technology. LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPO website at https://ipo.llnl.gov/?q=resources-industry-working_with_us for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Micro TLC Kit technology should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. •3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships Office P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 224-10 Please provide your written statement within fourteen (14) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Micro TLC Kit technology.
