Description
The United States Geological Survey Western Region Coastal and Marine Geology Science Center is conducting studies of sediment transport on fringing coral reefs. A key focus is measuring and monitoring the movement and ultimate depositional site of sedimentary particles on reefs. These studies include measurement of waves, currents, turbidity and other important oceanographic characteristics; they also depend on measuring the abundance and flux of particles to establish a budget for the particles. One technique used in other coastal environments is the tracking of particles that have been tagged with a chemical or physical property that allows for easy identification and estimates of relative abundance. Tagging techniques include using radioactive isotopes, fluorescent dyes, and magnetic coatings. The Coral Reef Project needs to employ tagged particles for a study on the Molokai, Hawaii coral reef; an approach using a combined magnetic fluorescent coating is preferred due to environmental and permitting restrictions. For this planned experiment a sample size of tagged particles needs to be on the order of 150kg, and the tagging material must be non-invasive and environmentally neutral. For this experiment, magnetic coatings of the type used by Partrac LTD, paired with an identifiable fluorescent coating, are the only acceptable type of tagging. Notice is given that USGS does not intend to solicit other quotes for this effort, as Partrac LTD is the only known supplier of the necessary type coatings, as well as the expertise in dispersal and measurement procedures. Should you wish to discuss this requirement with USGS, please Dick Paprocki, USGS Contract Specialist, at (916) 278-9442 or rpaprocki@usgs.gov prior to the closing date of this announcement.
