Description
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has obtained the Cab Technology Integration Laboratory (CTIL) to assess locomotive crew capabilities to safely communicate, plan, and control locomotives within the railroad system given the implementation of new controls and displays. The CTIL will enable FRA to address locomotive crew performance issues, as well as address any new capabilities that require more electronic interfaces and displays, like GPS systems, as the industry moves to a more digital cab environment. These a dditional lab capabilities will enable the FRA to address ergonomic issues related to the safety and health of alternative seat designs, for example, as well as general cab design and layout. The CTIL will demonstrate advantages of a human-centered systems approach to the design of locomotive cabs. The design of CTIL accommodates portability but is based at the US DoT Volpe Transportation Research Center in Cambridge, Mass. Human factors personnel at Volpe will be involved in the daily operations. Alion Science and Technology is the developer and manufacturer of the hardware and software for the CTIL. Alion is uniquely qualified to successfully complete delivery and user training support for the CTIL design and capabilities. Alion is hereby awarded a Firm-Fixed-Price support contract for twelve (12) months to not to exceed $246,000 awarded on September 13, 2010.
