Description
This is a Navy item within the Army's B5A account for demil/disposal efforts. The Navy drawings are loaded in MIDAS. Interested parties should reference any Navy publications for further clarification. The Sea Mine Anchor Assemblies are consisting of a nonmagnetic stainless-steel case and a cast-steel anchor, the MK 56 system is equipped with flight gear for launching from aircraft planted by B-52H Strato-fortress, F/A-18A/D Hornet, and P-3C Orion aircraft. When laid, the mine sinks to the bottom where mine and anchor separation take place. This solicitation is only for the cast-steel anchor, which contains only.001279 pounds of HBX3 explosive plus a mooring cable coated with PCB. Should the mine become embedded in bottom sediment before case/anchor separation and mooring take place, a slow burning propellant in the anchor is ignited which frees the mine from any mud in which it may be buried. As the case raises, a hydrostat, which clamps to an 18-foot loose bight in the mooring cable, senses the preset mooring depth and falls free to release the loose bight. This permits the tension on the cable to relax and cause a pawling mechanism in the anchor to lock and stop further cable payout. The anchor section contains the mooring cable and associated components necessary in mooring the mine case at its planned depth. The mooring cable is 1200 feet of 1/8 inch steel wire rope coated with Navy Formula 184 anti-fouling compound to prevent marine growth. This compound contains 45 percent Arochlor 1254, which is a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), 35 percent mercurous chloride, 4 percent beeswax, and 16 percent silica (by weight.)
