- Description
- Recovery Action - This modification is issued to obligate American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) funds to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for the project titled, Hydrogen-Bromine Flow Batteries for Grid-Scale Energy Storage in accordance with Work Authorization 09 CJ000 04 02. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and its team of industrial partners (DuPont, Bosch, and 3M) will develop a hydrogen-bromine (H2-Br2) flow-battery system for grid applications. H-Br cells use two highly reversible and kinetically-favored electrodes to provide high round-trip efficiency. In addition, the proposed technology is expected to offer high power capabilities, thereby reducing the cost of stack components. The H-Br system promises to meet the most stringent demands of costs, performance, lifetimes, and safety. To solve these technical challenges in this project, the LBNL team will apply novel technical approaches to deliver a proof-of-concept cell that will demonstrate the potential of this chemistry in grid-scale energy storage applications. The contract is a cost reimbursement contract because the uncertainties of the research mission of the laboratory make it impossible to estimate with reasonable accuracy the costs of performance making the firm, fixed price contract type inappropriate.
