- NOAA Air Resources Laboratory (ARL) has an urgent requirement for the recovery of data from a failed RAID system. The Overland Snap Server 520 storage system contains four (4) x 750GB internal hard drives and one S50 Expansion Unit with four (4) 750GB and four (4) x 1TB drives, RAID-5, internal total 10TB raw space. However, there is about 2~3TB data which needs to be recovered. It has been determined this is a Level 4 recovery. This storage array failed resulting in the inability to access any of the archived meteorological data. Although the storage array was designed with sufficient redundancy that one in five disks could fail without a loss of data, in this instance, a failure in the controller unit resulted in the inability to access any of the disk drives. A new controller unit supplied by the storage array company was not able to access the data on the disk drives. The meteorological data contained on these drives is crucial to several research programs and the use of a data recovery system is required. After contacting four data recovery service companies recommended by the manufacturer, ESS Data Recovery, Inc., 110 North Research Drive, Edwardsville, IL 62025 was selected for evaluation and recovery of data.
