- Description
- RECOVERY - NASA LARC awarded a Cost Plus Fixed Fee task order toBoeing Corp.under contract NNL10AA05B for 'Composite Cryotank Technologies and Demonstration Design,Analysis, and Testing for Composite LH2 Cryotanks.' This competitive selection (1 of 4selections) was made after a competition among the existing multiple award Structures,Materials, Aerodynamics, Aerothermodynamics, and Acoustics, Research, and Technology(SMAAART) contractors. The required services include exploring advanced compositematerials and processes to reduce the overall cost and weight of liquid hydrogen (LH2)cryotanks. For this effort, the Contractor shall perform equivalency testing to ensurecurrent autoclave materials properties match those established under the 2nd GenerationReusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) Cryotank Development program and to determine thesuitability of out-of-autoclave materials and processes for use in composite cryotanks. The Contractor shall also design a 10-meter composite cryotank based on a Governmentprovided Aluminum Lithium (Al-Li) design to determine accurate cost and weight savingsassociated with composite cryotanks. The Contractor shall also evaluate the technicalreadiness level (TRL), manufacturing readiness level (MRL), and risk associated withfabricating large composite cryotanks. The Contractor shall then create a phase 2 plandetailing the cost, design, and manufacturing options for creating and testing two -scalecomposite cryotank test articles. The effort will be funded by American Recovery andReinvestment Act (ARRA) funding and is in support of the Exploration Systems MissionDirectorate (ESMD) and the Exploration Technology Development Programs (ETDP) AdvancedComposites Technology (ACT) Project.
