Description
RECOVERY - NASA LARC awarded a Cost Plus Fixed Fee task order to Northrop GrummanCorp. under contract NNL10AA07B for 'Composite Cryotank Technologies and DemonstrationDesign, Analysis, and Testing for Composite LH2 Cryotanks.' This competitive selection(1 of 4 selections) was made after a competition among the existing multiple awardStructures, Materials, Aerodynamics, Aerothermodynamics, and Acoustics, Research, andTechnology (SMAAART) contractors. The required services include exploring advancedcomposite materials and processes to reduce the overall cost and weight of liquidhydrogen (LH2) cryotanks. For this effort, the Contractor shall perform equivalencytesting to ensure current autoclave materials properties match those established underthe 2nd Generation Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) Cryotank Development programand todetermine the suitability of out-of-autoclave materials and processes for use incomposite cryotanks. The Contractor shall also design a 10-meter composite cryotankbased on a Government provided Aluminum Lithium (Al-Li) design to determine accurate costand weight savings associated with composite cryotanks. The Contractor shall alsoevaluate the technical readiness level (TRL), manufacturing readiness level (MRL), andrisk associated with fabricating large composite cryotanks. The Contractor shall thencreate a phase 2 plan detailing the cost, design, and manufacturing options for creatingand testing two -scale composite cryotank test articles. The effort will be funded byAmerican Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding and is in support of theExploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD ) and the Exploration TechnologyDevelopment Programs (ETDP) Advanced Composites Technology (ACT) Project.
