- Description
- Justification and Approval for a sole source from ILLUMINA, INC., for laboratory consumables for conducting genotyping experiments using the high throughput genotyping assay method developed by Illumina (WG-401-1001 iSelect Custom Bead Chip Kit, 69 each). Purchase of a high density genotyping assay, known as the Infinium assay, developed by Illumina which allows thousands of different DNA markers to be analyzed in 48 individuals in a single reaction assay, thus, permitting a large amount of data to be generated in a short period of time. The Biosciences Research Laboratory has been using Illumina's reagents to perform similar genotyping experiments in the previous four years with success. The Biosciences Research Laboratory recently initiated a collaborative project with barley scientists from various institutions in the US and in Europe with a plan to genotype 9,000 DNA markers on 3,312 US barley lines. These markers are custom designed and included in the high density bead chip kit along with other chemical reagents manufactured by Illumina. Illumina, a large business, is the sole manufacturer of these kits. The equipment necessary to perform these assays is already available in at the Biosciences Research Laboratory in Fargo, North Dakota, and a large invest amount investment has already been made in Illumina products (approximately $300K) to equip our lab for conducting these assays. Moreover, by using the same assay system, the data consistency will allow us to compare and share results with our European colleagues.
